The Towel

What does it look like when the most powerful person in the room picks up a towel instead of a scepter? In John 13, we find Jesus in his final hours before the cross, and rather than rallying his followers with a speech about power or position, he kneels down and washes their feet. This single act dismantles every leadership model the world had ever seen. The Roman governors were served. The religious elites were served. Even the disciples themselves had been arguing about who would be the greatest. Yet here is the one who spoke the universe into existence, choosing a basin of water and a towel. The central lesson is both simple and staggering: those with the most responsibility are the ones God expects to serve the most. This is not a passive or weak posture. It is a deeply intentional, love-driven choice. And the love behind it is not partial or conditional. It extends even to those who are plotting betrayal. The spiritual challenge placed before us is this: can we lead, serve, and love people even when we know they mean us harm? Can we pick up the towel when everything in us wants to put it down?
